Arranging a comfortable and ergonomic recreation area in an apartment or in the country is one of critical tasks when repairing. But ready-made furniture from stores, such as sofas or dining tables, often does not fit the space available to the owners. Of course, an excellent solution is to order a set of furniture in the workshop, so that every detail fits perfectly into the interior of the living room, veranda or gazebo. Does everyone want to pay huge sums of money for such a service? That is why this article will discuss how to create a cozy and comfortable place for the whole family with the help of a trestle bed with your own hands.

What is a trestle bed?

Traditionally, a trestle bed is a platform raised on legs that can be used as a lounger, sofa and even a dining area (if there is a small table-stand). Trestle beds are made of wood.

Initially, this piece of furniture appeared in the countries of East Asia. This is due to the fact that the floors in the eastern houses were either smeared with clay or stone, and therefore cold. The wooden trestle bed, on the other hand, allowed during sleep, rest and meals not to come into contact with the cold surface, but to sit on a warm mattress among soft pillows. Often, the design of the trestle bed was complemented by a wooden canopy or a fabric canopy.

In Russia, the idea of using a trestle bed was adopted from the Mongols, but it was not accepted to eat on them - this piece of furniture was used exclusively as a bed. But modern fashion trends have revived the popularity of the trestle bed as a place for relaxation, tea drinking and eating.

What kind of trestle bed can be?

As mentioned above, often in the manufacture of a trestle bed, its simple design was supplemented various elements like awnings, canopies, etc. Now, with the availability of high-quality tools and materials, you can make an ergonomic recreation area from a simple couch even on your own.

So, the trestle bed can be:

  • Open - that is, to represent an ordinary spacious lounger, raised above the ground or floor with the help of legs;
  • With a canopy that protects people resting on the platform from rain, sun, etc .;
  • With a canopy or a tent, the fabric of which will also protect the trestle bed from the sun, but also perform especially well as a decorative function;
  • With drawers, shelves, a small ladder, seats, a table for a meal, etc. - with any additional elements for which you have enough imagination.

In addition, you can make such a trestle bed, which will be used either as a platform for gatherings with family and friends, or as a sunbed for sunbathing in the garden or as a sofa for a gazebo.

Within the framework of the article, we will dwell in more detail on trestle beds with awnings. There are many options for implementing such an idea, and you can easily choose exactly the one that is suitable for your room, veranda, gazebo or even a loggia. But first, let's talk about how to make the design of the simplest trestle bed with our own hands.

We make a trestle bed with our own hands

Since the trestle bed has a very simple design, you will not need any special materials and tools for its manufacture. Here is a list of what you need to prepare to work on creating a do-it-yourself lounger:

  • Wood - you will need both bars and boards. It is possible to use plywood or chipboard;
  • Protective primers and compounds for wood, varnish or paint, depending on your preferences;
  • Saw or jigsaw;
  • Drill, screwdriver;
  • Fasteners (screws, self-tapping screws, corners, etc.);
  • Roulette, level, building angle;
  • Sandpaper or sander.

But it is important to remember that the primary condition for obtaining a high-quality result is the presence of at least basic skills in all the listed tools and working with materials.

So, the stages of making a trestle bed with your own hands:

  1. Estimate the size of the trestle bed and its location in the room or in the free space where you plan to place it. After that, you need to take measurements using a tape measure.
  2. Prepare a sketch of the future product.

To do this, you do not need to have artistic skills - you just need to sketch the shape and approximate aspect ratio, details of the trestle bed. After that, it is important to note the exact dimensions of all parts.

  1. Prepare bars, boards and other materials for work.

First, they need to be cut exactly according to the dimensions that you indicated in the sketch. Observance of accuracy is perhaps one of the main conditions for creating an even and comfortable trestle bed. Plus, if you cut a few smaller pieces of wood, you just waste the material and money down the drain.

Secondly, wooden elements should be treated with protective agents against fungi, mold and insects already at this stage. This will allow you not to be afraid that a problem will arise at the joints and placement of fasteners.

  1. Assemble the frame of the trestle bed.

The simplest option is a rectangular shape, but when assembling the seat frame, it is important to use an angle for checking. Further, the legs are attached to the frame - they must be strong enough to withstand the entire structure along with the people on it. It is best to play it safe and make them wider and thicker than to restore the broken structure later.

  1. Assemble the seat.

The base of the structure is connected and reinforced with bars, boards, slats. A seat is hammered on top - just for it it is advisable to use solid sheets of chipboard or plywood if the trestle bed is planned to be small.

  1. Install the collar on three sides.

The elements of the side are also attached to the base - vertical bars are connected with horizontal slats along the perimeter of the trestle bed from three sides (as an option, you can close all four sides with a side and leave only a small passage to the platform).

In general, after installing the seat, the trestle bed can already be considered complete. Now you can paint it, put a mattress with pillows on it, or leave it as it is. But such an element of furniture will not be comfortable and beautiful enough, so you should think about its "upgrade":

  • In addition to the side, you can also install a base for a canopy or canopy. It is best that the vertical columns from the beams pass into the legs - then the structure will be the most durable;
  • One of the sides can be closed with a semblance of a wall (in this case, chipboard or plywood are also great), and then organize niches or shelves in it. If the trestle bed is spacious enough, it will be possible to place small potted flowers, decorative items such as figurines or utensils for tea drinking on the shelves;
  • In small trestle beds on verandas or loggias, it is advisable to install boxes for storing various little things or things. They are provided for in the design even at the sketch stage, and are hammered together with the base;
  • If the trestle bed is planned to be used as a place for rest and dining in the fresh air, it is worth installing seats at the sides along the perimeter. They should be just above the level of the trestle bed itself. Usually, in this case, the platform is upholstered with soft material and covered with a beautiful fabric, while leaving space for installing the table;
  • For the same purpose, you can also make a table in the center of the trestle bed. Alternatively, install it in a small recess, having thought over this element even at the sketching stage. But a removable and folding table will be much more practical, because then the trestle bed can easily be used for sleeping;
  • To make it easier to climb onto a high platform, install a small ladder. This element of the trestle bed looks especially good with solid sides and a canopy.

To create a soft dacha trestle bed you will need:
plastic bottles with a volume of 1.5 liters - 72 pieces;
Scotch;
double sided tape;
scissors;
glue "cosmofen";

Reel any strong rope;
foam rubber 5cm thick;
artificial fur;
thread and needle;
knife.

The first link of three is created plastic bottles... One of them remains intact, and the upper part is cut off from the other two and thrown away. The resulting bases are put on the first bottle from both sides. There are 24 such links for this model. Now the section is folded from three links and wrapped tightly with adhesive tape. A total of 8 sections are required.

The bottle sections are connected together and secured with tape on all sides. A rectangle is cut out of the cardboard, equal in size to the narrow plane of the plastic workpiece. You will need a piece of foam rubber of the same size. The cardboard is glued to the upper base of the product with universal glue, and on top is additionally fixed with tape.

Next, double-sided tape is applied to the sides of the workpiece, the upper paper part is removed and a rope is pulled over the sticky layer. The rope is laid in tight rows around the entire side of the model. The winding starts from the bottom of the product and ends, not reaching the very top of 5cm. Strips 6 cm wide are cut from the fur fabric. and with the help of "cosmofen" glue they are glued to the walls remaining without winding. Fur strips are also glued along the side edges of the rope, this will fix the winding.

After moving to a house where there was almost nothing from everyday life, I thought so: to make the simplest furniture out of boards. It's not a problem here - to buy lumber. The problem is that doing everything manually is slow. Therefore, to begin with, I still bought the most necessary furniture - five wardrobes and a bed - in the store. They brought it to me and collected it on the spot.

Having put all the things on the shelves, I made room on the floor and began to think about where and how to place the homemade shelves - what is in the kitchen, and what is in the room along the free walls. It took three years to think it over. During this time, I tried to lay a second floor to insulate the room, but then I decided that it was inappropriate, and the purchased cubic meter of edged board would just come in handy for making furniture.

I also tried to put cabinets and a sink with a cabinet bought in Ikea in the kitchen, but they did not fit into a compact (to put it mildly) country kitchen with a Swedish stove. Only during the assembly did I see how cumbersome they are. The sink had to be postponed until better times, which will come after the renovation of the hall - that's where I will place all the ikea. These cabinets remain in the kitchen for now, but they take up a lot of space, and because of them there is simply nowhere to put an ordinary table for food and cooking. After all, there is also a refrigerator! But I'll tell you about the kitchen next time.

And now about the sleeping corner, which is basically finished. One bed is difficult to manage - sometimes relatives come to visit - there are three of them, plus me. For myself a year ago I made nary-kanary in the kitchen - it is always warm over the stove, and I really like it here. I started making trestle beds in September 2011, when my hands were a little free from gardening work. I managed to finish it by the arrival of the guests - I had Sister with a friend.

There is no need to describe the process - everything can be seen in the photo. I will briefly tell you about some points. I made the trestle bed so high that a) sleep higher, not like city people sleep in their apartments, where the temperature is the same on the floor and under the ceiling; b) keep boxes with things or potatoes under the trestle bed. The dimensions of the trestle bed were adjusted to fit the mattress bought in Ikea 190 by 90 cm.

I used this trestle bed for a whole year, it was comfortable to sleep on it, but it actually stood in the middle of the room, because, lying close to the outer wall, I felt its coldness, and the flow of cold from the window was even stronger. It was necessary to make an expander shelf in this place, for air insulation. In addition, a curbstone was needed at the head of the bed - again, it was inconvenient to rest your head against the wall, even if it was the inner one.

And I noticed one more drawback in the process of using: from repeated movements at the trestle bed, the legs were loose. I had to remove them and reinstall them, but according to a different scheme.

Over the course of the year, I gradually procured parts for annexes to the trestle bed - I sawed off boards of the required length and width, and cleaned them.

In September 2012, she finally mounted a curbstone of a very original design - it fit exactly into the pier, it even had to be moved and adjusted more precisely several times. Here I must say that my house is not even everywhere - there are sharp and obtuse corners, the ceiling height in the corners of the room is different, and even the floor is humped in some places. The (old) windows were slanting, interior door not rectangular ...

Immediately after installation and adjustment of the curbstone, I took up the expander shelf. Its length is the length of the trestle bed. Height - at the level of the windowsill. The windowsill, however, is not parallel to the floor, well, these are trifles! I put the shelf down, measuring out with a level.

It rests on three vertical supports nailed to the floor. In two places the shelf is nailed to the wall and to the window sill. From the side of the trestle bed, it is sewn up with two boards so that the mattress does not slip there, and so that the cold air does not go to the bed. That, in fact, is the whole structure.

For the top, I used boards with uneven edges, cleaning and smoothing their edges with a file. Assembly - on nails and screws, using a hammer, screwdriver and screwdriver. Metal corners were used in limited quantities. I sawed the boards with a jigsaw, cleaned them with a file and a knife.

Making a couch with your own hands is not difficult; you do not have to be a professional carpentry. The most important thing is to think carefully about all the details, make a plan, precise drawings (they can be found on the Internet) and select quality materials.

Drawing for making a couch with your own hands

Ordinary wooden blocks are suitable for the frame; it is better to give preference to natural wood. But you can also use chipboard. To make the product softer, use a mattress or foam rubber. Upholstery fabric will give a beautiful appearance to this type of furniture.

How to make a couch with your own hands?

Please note that all wooden elements must be sanded with sandpaper, painted, and then varnished. Therefore, immediately decide on the desired color of the future product. When the first layer of varnish is dry, you can sandpaper the details again - all the small chips sticking out will harden, and it will be easy to get rid of them.

Wooden couch with a soft mattress and a raised part for the convenience of procedures

If you want to make the product soft, use a universal and cheap material - foam rubber as a filler. Choose a medium hardness, as too soft will sag, and hard will bring discomfort. Cut the foam rubber a few centimeters more - it must be fixed at the bottom of the parts to prevent premature wear of the upholstery.

Foam rubber for softness

In order to sheathe the product it was easier, follow this scheme of actions: first fix it in an unstressed state to one long side of the part, then pull and fasten from the center of the opposite side to the edges. Follow the same sequence with short ends.

The process of fixing the upholstery fabric in the corners

The best option for the headboard lifting mechanism would be the step fixation, popular in the models of old clamshells.

Headboard lifting mechanism - step fixation

Please note that a device for a sofa or ottoman will not work in this case - due to the small size of the lever, you will have to make great efforts to lower the headboard.

You can choose a two-position headboard, the work of which is ensured by gas microlifts with a force of 40N-80N.

Legs from a bar for the future couch

For the legs of the structure, cut the bar into pieces of 50 centimeters; for the rest of the parts, you need to prepare plywood with the following parameters:

  • for a bed 170cm * 70cm;
  • on the headboard 38cm * 70cm;
  • two long drawers 200cm * 17cm;
  • four short drawers 56cm * 17cm.

Short tsars are fixed between the long ones. In long ones, do the same, but in a plane with a diameter of 8 mm. Place one short sidebar in the interval 40 centimeters from the head of the bed.

The legs are attached with 4 * 60 self-tapping screws. In order to avoid the formation of cracks in the wood, drill holes with a diameter of 5 mm in the drawers, and 2.5 mm in the legs.

We fix the legs with self-tapping screws

Along the perimeter of the box, in addition to the headboard, screw the corners to fix the bed. If the couch will be equipped with gas shock absorbers - attach them as well, following the supplied user manual.

Twist the bed to the corners of the box, stepping back 5 centimeters from the foot and on the sides. Set the butterfly hinges at the headboard, then in the lowered, horizontal position, place them under the bed and secure. It remains to fix the counterpart of the gas lifts and the couch is ready with your own hands.

Product decoration

Unusual cable bed-bed

For decoration, you can use only paints and varnishes, various synthetic, microfiber, dermantine or velor - it all depends on your taste and budget. Synthetic upholstery keeps color and shape for a long time, but it tends to become electrified and attracts dust.

Massage couch with wooden legs and upholstered

The couch will have an interesting appearance if you drill holes in the plywood and pull the filler with nylon thread. The holes will be hidden with beautiful buttons covered with matching fabric.

After buying a summer house, I found more than thirty wooden pallets in the basement of the house. My wife offered to chop it for wood, but my hand did not rise. The tree is good, it can be used much more efficiently. What have I not done for the dacha. Starting from the shop, ending with a semi-gazebo. In general, there is where to roam. There are a couple of pallets left, and besides, summer has come, the sun is frying at full speed. So I decided to make a wooden trestle bed for relaxing in the country.

The construction is incredibly simple. Three pallets make two full trestle beds.

One pallet is whole, the second - we disassemble into two layers. Remove half of the boards. We leave only the guide board and six jumpers. We adjust the angle of inclination. Not worth doing too sharp corner... It will be uncomfortable to lie down.

The guide is also from the pallet. We fasten both parts with self-tapping screws.

For convenience, stele a mattress on the bed. A great thing in the country. We put both taps closer to the fence, so that the shadow would cover the head. We put our legs on the lawn. Also made an additional table for drinks.
