DIY potato planter

A homemade potato planter will greatly facilitate the process of planting potatoes and save you from having to bend over each time to plant the tubers in the furrow. You can make a potato planter with your own hands, for this you can use the diagrams that are provided in this article.

This version of a manual potato planter is a wheelbarrow with a cone-shaped hopper and a dispenser wheel. Potatoes are poured into the planter bunker, at the bottom of the bunker there is a hole into which the tubers fall one by one and fall into the dispenser wheel.

During the movement of the planter, the wheel rotates, there are recesses in the wheel, into which tubers fall from the hopper through the hole, as the wheel rotates, the tubers from the recesses of the wheel fall into the furrow, thus planting potatoes. The tubers fall into the furrow at a uniform distance.

The principle of operation of a manual potato planter is shown in the image.

How to make a planter for potatoes with your own hands.

The figure shows a diagram of a potato planter.

As can be seen from the figure, the planter consists of parts:

  1. Cart handle.
  2. Bunker.
  3. Metal discs with grousers.
  4. Wheel guard.
  5. Bracket.
  6. Notched wheel.
  7. Axle for mounting the wheel.

The planter bunker can be made from plywood or from any cone-shaped container, at the bottom of the bunker you need to make a hole a little larger than the size of the tubers. The bunker is attached to the frame of the planter.

The dispenser wheel can be made from two pieces of thick plywood, along the circumference of the wheel at an even distance, you need to make recesses for the tubers.

On both sides of the dispenser wheel, metal discs with lugs are attached.

To prevent the tubers from falling out of the wheel ahead of time, we install a protective shield in front of the wheel.

A home-made potato planter has a rather simple design, but at the same time, this design has its drawbacks, it is advisable to use tubers of the same size for planting, too large tubers can get stuck in the hopper opening, and too small ones will fall through several pieces at once. Therefore, this planter is more suitable for medium-sized tubers, in which case the potatoes will fall evenly from the hopper into the dispenser wheel and will not get stuck in the hopper outlet.
