LED Strip Light

Illumination of car disks with the help of LED strip will change its appearance, giving expressiveness and originality. Thanks to a wide range of colors, the choice of glow is selected individually. Installation of RGB tape will make it possible to control the brightness and color of the glow from the remote control. The LED strip receives power from the 12V on-board network.
Only sealed models with IP67–68 can be used. Otherwise, there is a high probability of a short circuit in the area with LEDs during rain (snowfall). The sequence of connecting the LED strip to the disks for its use as a "ring of fire" will be discussed below.

Video projection

Illumination of car wheels by projection method is one of the brightest achievements in the field of tuning. Video projection of wheels is not easy to surprise among passers-by, but it also makes you wonder how this is possible? This revolutionary technology works as follows.

A special module is attached to the wheel, inside of which a microcontroller board is built-in with the possibility of flashing via a USB port and powered by 4 batteries. The executive body is an RGB LED strip, with the help of which a colorful pattern is formed. The available variations are first downloaded to the flash drive from the laptop and then copied to the module. You can select and change the type of image while driving directly from the salon.

LED backlighting based on video projection has its own characteristics and disadvantages:

• the operating mode of each wheel is set by a separate remote control;
• display stability at a speed of 30–100 km / h;
• batteries run out quickly;
• easily dismantled. Therefore, it is better not to be left unattended;
• the water protection class does not always correspond to the declared value.

The cost

The price of the backlight can vary greatly and depends on the type and method of installation. The cheapest way is to buy one-color spool caps. In this case, you can decorate 4 wheels for 500 rubles, without altering anything or overpaying for installation.

Backlighting based on LED strip will be more expensive. All the necessary parts are available for sale, but the cost of a running meter of sealed tape starts at $ 10. In addition, installation work will take a lot of time, and if you trust the service center, then the total costs will double. If you use a multicolor tape, then you will have to add another 1000-1500 rubles to the cost - this is the price of an RGB controller.

The LED projector is the most expensive of the presented backlights. When ordering from China, a programmable projection device will cost $ 50 for one wheel. The cost of the same device in Moscow with installation and warranty starts at $ 100 per wheel.

Disk illumination and law

When deciding to install wheel illumination on a car, one should not forget about its dubious legality. None of the regulatory documents allow the installation of additional lighting devices, except for those listed in GOST 8769-75 “External lighting devices. Quantity, location, color. "

The basis for punishing the offender is clause 3.1 of the "list of malfunctions in which it is forbidden to operate the vehicle" of the traffic rules of the Russian Federation 2016. DIY tuning

Let's look at how to make wheel illumination using an example with an LED strip. In addition to it, you will need an aluminum flat profile, an arched perforated profile, nylon ties, wires and tools. Do-it-yourself car wheel illumination is done in the following way. On the basis of the profiles, a structure is assembled that resembles a simple wheel, where the spokes are 3 aluminum strips, and the rim is a building profile for arches. The frame is placed behind the brake disc to hide the radiation source, leaving only light for review.

The supply wires are soldered to the segment with LEDs, and the contact point is filled with hot melt glue. A led tape is glued to the outer part of the perforated rim, and then the fastening is strengthened with ties. The wire is hidden in a plastic corrugation and fastened to the levers located on the bottom with the help of ties.

Wires, detachable connections and soldering points must be reliably sealed.

The connection to the battery is made through a separate switch, for which you should consider the place in the cabin. If you plan to install an RGB tape, then you need to find a place for the controller. Due to surges in the on-board network, it is recommended to install a powerful 12V stabilizer, which will protect all LED modules used to illuminate the car.

If there is no protective cover on the car disc, then the illumination of the car discs with your own hands should be done as follows:

1. It is best to make a special frame that will simulate a protective casing. It can be made from light metal - a mounting strip or even a tire, and when taking measurements, do not forget to try on the brake disc itself and leave a margin for the distance between it and the tire rim;
2. Next, set the rays coming from the center of the wheel, where the created rim will be mounted under the backlight. To do this, you need to remove the disc and the caliper itself;
3. Then we install the outer rim, where we fix the led backlight with special clamps.

If you want the light to flow not from the spokes and go straight from the disk, then you will need to work a little harder, this technology is more complex:

1. You need to stock up on a metal strip and accurate measurements of your car's suspension parts;
2. You need to make a small spider that will need to be fixed to the protective casing. As a result, the tape rim will be exposed to the outside of the vehicle's brake disc.

Please note that you will also need additional spacers, which will have to protrude from the rim to attach the tape.

You should understand that using this method, you change the wheel offset of the car, which will be displayed on the properties of the car's suspension. The design must be done carefully and the installation must be made rigid enough. This will help prevent potential kinks from mechanical stress and protect the bars from twisting into the spokes of the wheel itself.

Rear wheel lighting

If on the rear wheels you have the same situation as on the front wheels (there is a protective cover or not), then the LED lighting is connected in a similar way to the front wheels. Another question is if you have brake drums on your rear wheels. There are several ways to implement highlighting here:

1. Fix the tape by drilling holes in the brake drums after removing them. The tape is secured with clamps. But the method has one significant drawback - the light, thus, will not have a uniform reflected form, but a point line. This can be avoided if the tape is slightly drowned behind the brake drum.
2. You can place the tape in front of the drum, for which you can use the spacer described above.

In any case, it is very important for you to also adhere to the following rules while performing light tuning:

1. Place the tape so that the light goes from the middle of the disc to the street, through the spokes of the disc.
2. It is necessary to place the wiring for powering the diodes only in protected areas; for this, use clamps and thin plastic tubes.

It is good to use flexible brake hoses to secure the wiring, to which the wires can be attached with the same plastic clamps.

It is worth cutting and connecting the led strip in accordance with these recommendations:

1. Since this tape is simple sections with LEDs, it can only be cut between sections that include three LEDs. Calculate exactly the space allowed, it is most often already marked on the tape, and do not cut the section, otherwise it will not glow.
2. To connect the tape to the wiring of the machine, you need to use a soldering iron; twists are not allowed. You can also use a specialized connector for this, it will allow you to abandon the soldering iron, but may not provide sufficient contact density.
3. The tape is very sensitive to kinks, the minimum bending radius is 8 centimeters.
4. When connecting to power, make sure that the negative terminal on the battery is removed.
5. It is also advisable to use a voltage stabilizer for LEDs, 12 volts are enough to power the backlight.

Soldering LED strip

Wheel lighting also implies a basic knowledge of the correct handling of lighting and electricity, so if you are not confident in your skills, you better leave it to professionals who can guarantee you the best result. But if we put aside the irony and expound on the merits, then in this article I wanted to talk about the illumination of car wheel rims, how best to install the LED strip, what options for mounting this strip are possible based on your desires and design features of cars.
The first thing I want to say is that this article will give an example of a mechanical backlight mounting for discs. The electrical part and the choice of LED strip for illumination are discussed in another related article "Connecting LED strip in a car".

Illumination of disks for the front axles of the car

1. Consider the simplest option for mounting an LED strip for illuminating drives. This is a classic case - a MacPherson strut front suspension with a brake disc guard installed.
In this case, the LED backlight strip is attached to the edge of the protective casing. Holes are drilled along the perimeter of the casing with a step of 5 - 7 cm. (The diameter of the holes should ensure the passage for plastic clamps). If the tape has a self-adhesive backing, the protective film is removed and the tape is glued to a clean, grease-free surface of the protective cover. If there is no such base, then the tape is attached only by means of plastic clamps threaded through the drilled holes on the casing and holding the tape at the edge along the perimeter of the casing.

2. In the second case, a similar situation is for installing a tape for illuminating discs, except that on some cars there is no protective mud cover for the brake disc. In this case, you cannot do without additional structures.
The most effective option would be to make a frame that mimics the missing casing. So for its manufacture, it is possible to use light metal elements, for example, mounting tape, or a thin rolled bar.
Initially, we mount the rays from the center of the wheel, to which the rim for mounting the backlight will be attached.

In order to make it easier to assemble the structure, you can dismantle the brake disc and brake caliper. When calculating the size of the lengths outgoing from the center of the beams of the structure, do not forget to try on the brake disc, ensuring the guaranteed clearance between the disc and the outer rim.

We are installing the outer rim, which will be the retaining structure for our LED strip for backlighting the disk.

We mount the backlight with clamps, by analogy with the option above.

3. This version of the disc illumination is interesting in that the illumination does not come directly from the spokes, but comes from the center of the disc. Such light is reflected several times from the surfaces of the structure and is obtained more evenly. It should be noted that the design is not so simple to implement.
The first thing you need to design such a disc backlight is a metal tape and precisely measured geometric dimensions of your suspension parts. As a result, a kind of spider is made, which is attached to the protective casing, and the rim for fastening the tape goes to the outer part of the brake disc.

Also, for this design, it will be necessary to use spacers installed on the brake disc. Such spacers should protrude from the rim on which the backlight tape will be attached.

Note that when using spacers, you will change the wheel offset by affecting the properties of your suspension. The design must be made neatly and rigidly to prevent possible bends from minor impacts and to avoid twisting the metal bar into the spokes of the wheel.

4. If you have brake discs with a protective cover on the rear axle. Then the variant of mounting the tape for illuminating the disks will correspond to case 1 (see above)

If you do not have a protective cover, then this is option number 2.5. A more interesting situation is with the use of brake drums, often installed on the rear axle, especially in domestic cars. The first option for attaching the backlight is to remove the drum, drill holes in it and secure the tape with clamps. In principle, the option is simple, similar to options 1 and 4, but has one drawback. In this case, the light will not go reflected, but directly from the LEDs. A more uniform glow can be obtained by slightly drowning the shank behind the rear drum. The rims for attaching the backlight can be grabbed for welding or secured with fasteners.

6 The option of installing rim illumination is also applicable for vehicles with drums on the rear axle. The variant is similar to case 3, when the rim is based in front of the brake drum, and a spacer is used to enable the disc installation.

For all of the above methods of mounting the backlight of disks, that is, attaching the LED strip, the following rules apply:
- The rim illumination tape is positioned in such a way that the light predominantly spreads from the inside out, through the spokes of the rim.
- Wiring must be routed to the body in protected areas. It is necessary to choose the most optimal location of the lighting wiring directly on the machine. When passing the wiring from the wheel to the power point, you can also use clamps and a protective plastic tube (visible in version 5).
A convenient solution that provides flexibility for the wiring and reliable fastening are flexible brake hoses, to which you can fasten using all the same clamps.

• fix the LED light on the brake disc or drum;
• use a special luminous paint - phosphor.

We use LED strip

To connect the LED strip, you can purchase a ready-made kit, which includes: the strip itself, terminals for connecting the strip to the car wiring, rim and clamps for securing the strip. The easiest way is to install the backlight on disc brakes, you can do it yourself without the help of specialists from a car service.

The way of fixing the LED strip depends on the presence of a protective cover of the brake disc. If there is one, then you will have to drill holes in it in steps of 5-7 centimeters. Then the tape itself is glued along the edges of the casing, and plastic clamps are inserted into the drilled holes to secure the tape.

If the tape does not have an adhesive base, then it can be “planted” on special glue or liquid nails, and tightened with clamps in the same way.

If there is no protective cover, then the installation of the LED strip will be more difficult, because you will have to make your own rim to protect the LEDs. Such a rim can be made from a durable metal tape. The tape will have to be fixed on the suspension elements, then bent into a circle, additionally secured with clamps. Such work must be carried out very carefully, since the wheel departure is disturbed and the characteristics of the car change accordingly.

Plastic brake disc covers can also be ordered. They are matched to a specific model, so they should be completely similar in size. As a result of this illumination at the edges of the disc, it will appear that you have light spokes.

If desired, you can create a structure that will illuminate the central part of the disc, that is, the tape will not be attached to the edges of the protective casing, but in its central part - the one that is screwed to the hub. You should have a spider-like structure - a small circle of metal tape and welded "legs" extending from it for fastening to the casing. It is fastened with bolts in pre-drilled holes. The fastening must be very reliable, because if it does not hold up on the go, then the consequences will not be the most pleasant.
