How to make a canopy over a garage door with your own hands, types of canopies and instructions. A canopy over a garage door How to make a canopy for a garage

It is always more pleasant to drive dry and not get caught in the rain. To prevent water from the garage roof from getting onto the car owner during opening, it is best to mount a canopy over the garage door with your own hands, which will reliably protect against such an unpleasant situation.

This article will fully cover the topic of choosing a canopy design for a garage and its installation, as well as give practical advice on arrangement.

Necessity of a visor

Usually a canopy is installed in front of any entrance, and it can be not only a garage. This approach is due to the useful functions that the visor performs:

  • Protecting the owner from water getting on him during precipitation.
  • Protecting the room itself from moisture seeping inside.
  • Lack of high snow cover at the gates during the winter months.
  • If a tent canopy structure is installed, it becomes an excellent protection from the wind, which will prevent untimely closing of the gate.
  • Protection from the sun and heat of the gate.
  • Protection of the locking mechanism and gate hinges from moisture ingress and failure.
  • Additional protection of electrical components located on the gate side.

Design Features

Before you make a canopy over the garage door, you need to familiarize yourself with the main nuances of its manufacture and choose the materials that are most suitable for such a product.

Canopy materials

When choosing materials for making a visor, do not forget that during the winter months the load on this protruding element is high. For example, a ten-centimeter layer of snow will put a load on the canopy structure, which is equal to 0.4 tons.

You also need to secure the canopy especially carefully so that no gust of wind can break it.

So, there are no restrictions in the choice of material for the visor. Mainly used:

  • Pocarbonate
  • Corrugated sheet
  • Metal tiles
  • Slate
  • Ondulin
  • Strained glass
  • Tough.

Advice! For a monolithic garage, the canopy can be made of concrete, but this option requires special engineering calculations.

Most often, home craftsmen use polycarbonate to create a visor with their own hands. This material is distinguished by high quality characteristics, lightness, strength, light transmission and neat appearance.

Important! For difficult climatic conditions with snowy winters and strong gusts of wind, it is better to use monolithic polycarbonate for the visor.

For central Russia, cellular polycarbonate is quite suitable, which is only slightly inferior in strength to monolithic.

Existing types of canopies

The garage canopy can be installed in any desired design. In addition, the choice is quite large. This:

  • Single-pitch canopy. It is secured using straight or oblique supports.
  • Single-pitch canopy.
  • Arch-shaped visor.
  • Domed visor.
  • A visor with closed edges. It is also called tented. In principle, the sides can be additionally mounted to any of the above canopies, and it will reliably protect from wind and slanting precipitation.

Particular attention should be paid to the racks that support the canopy. They must be located in such a way as not to interfere with the gate opening and closing. To support the canopy, you can install 2 racks at the edges, or you can supplement them with one central one.

Important! When choosing a material for the canopy supports, you should immediately exclude wood, since it is quite short-lived.

Aluminum supports are also considered a good option, but they will be very difficult to fasten and require a large number of connecting angles. It is not advisable to weld aluminum.

The best option for installing visor supports is a metal corner.

Self-installation of a canopy over the garage

Before you make a canopy over the garage, you need to prepare the tools that may be needed. This:

  • The device for taking measurements is a tape measure or other measuring device.
  • Grinder with a set of discs.
  • Hammer with a set of drills.
  • Metal scissors.
  • Consumable material for fastening.
  • Welding machine.
  • Screwdriver.

After preparing everything necessary, you need to draw up on paper a design for the future canopy, indicating its design, location and all dimensions. In accordance with this document, further installation of the structure will be carried out.

Construction of a single-pitch canopy

The main criterion when installing this type of canopy is to install it at the point that is closest to the top of the gate, but so that it can open unhindered. Further work is carried out using the following technology:

Important! The front part of the visor should be curved upward so that the water does not drip, but goes away along the edges.

Gable canopy device

If you need to make a structure that will remove snow cover and precipitation from the gate, then a gable canopy is perfect for this. In addition, this design will perfectly protect the entrance from the wind. To obtain a high-quality visor design, you need to follow the following algorithm:

  1. Carrying out measurements in the same way as in the previous case with adding length to the gaps.
  2. Determining the height of the structure.
  3. Calculating the length of the slope. To do this, you need to carry out small mental operations. In particular, the square of the height indicator is added to the square of half the length of the base.
  4. Execution of the drawing and calculation of the total length of the extension.
  5. Selection of support for the structure. It can be pillars or brackets. In the case of brackets, they are made from right-angled triangles, and the side on which the frame will be located must be equal to the overhang length. This structure is screwed to the wall with self-tapping screws or anchors. In the case of columns, it will be necessary to make two holes, the depth of which is from 30 to 50 cm, and cement them, thereby strengthening them.
  6. Production of 2 pairs of rafters. The connection angle is calculated in accordance with the length of the slope and the width of the entire structure.
  7. Strengthening rafters with crossbars.
  8. Connection using jumpers at the base and ridge.
  9. Fastening the resulting triangle to supports or brackets.
  10. Fastening the rafters to the wall.
  11. Installation of sheathing and decking in accordance with the roofing used.

Arched canopy device

This design will complete the appearance of the building and make it more solid. For installation, you must follow the instructions:

  1. Determination of sizes according to wishes.
  2. Production of arches for a frame from a square metal profile with a cross-section from 12 to 16 mm. You need exactly as many arcs as will fit into the selected exit length. A small visor can be made using just two arches.

    Important! It is better to use a pipe bender for bending.

  3. Connecting arches with transverse strips.
  4. Mounting on posts or brackets. Instructions for their manufacture were described above.
  5. The arc, which is located near the wall, must be secured with anchors, for which holes are made in advance.
  6. Fastening roofing material.

Dome-shaped visor device

This type of canopy is more difficult to install. Most of the actions that need to be performed are described in previous options for installing canopies, but there are certain nuances:

A neat canopy over the garage is not only a finished appearance of the car box, but also a mandatory necessity. The accessory is especially important for those garages that are directed towards the gate.

The installation of this element above the garage door has significant advantages:

  • Comfortable gate opening during rain or snowfall.
  • During the cold months of the year it protects against the possible formation of ice, which means safe entry/exit of a car.
  • Minimizes moisture penetration into gate locks, increasing their service life.
  • Reduces the risk of lock systems freezing in winter.
  • Increases shade on hot summer days, making your stay in the car box a little more pleasant.

Which visor to choose

If you decide to complete the entrance to the car bay, then which canopy for the garage should you choose? Many garage owners are tormented by this issue, wanting to make a garage canopy reliable and at the lowest cost.

In this regard, professional builders recommend the following canopies (canopies) for garage doors, based on the configuration:

  • Single-pitch.
  • Gable.
  • Three slopes.
  • Arched.

If the distance between the top of the gate and the roof is minimal, no more than 300-400 mm, then only the first option can be implemented. If the roof is located at a considerable distance from the gate, you can “take a walk” by making a two- or three-slope canopy configuration or an arched version

In addition, the canopy over the garage door is selected based on the material used. The material options are as follows:

  • Polcarbonate.
  • Profiled sheet.
  • Galvanized sheet.
  • Metal tiles.
  • Slate.

Slate based canopy

To implement the idea, wavy slate is chosen.

Advantages of the material:

  • The rigidity of the roof, thanks to the “waves” of the transverse profile of the sheets.
  • Not afraid of corrosive wear.
  • Relatively inexpensive material.
  • When it rains, it does not create unpleasant drum noise.

Among the disadvantages, the following disadvantages can be noted:

  • Possibility of moisture leakage through the mounting holes due to unsuccessful fixation with screws or nails.
  • Creates a significant load if the canopy over the garage entrance is of impressive size.
  • Over time, it cracks, leading to necessary roof repairs.

Metal visor options

The advantages of a metal roof include the following aspects:

  • The design ultimately turns out to be light, without unnecessary load on the facade wall.
  • Reliably resists corrosion if the steel sheet is galvanized or has a polymer coating.
  • Nice appearance. A variety of color variations makes it possible to make the canopy individual.

If we are talking about corrugated sheets, then the canopy has an additional advantage over a flat roof, thanks to the wavy profile in the cross member. This profile allows you to withstand significant loads when exposed to thick snow.

Polycarbonate visors

The cheapest option for a garage canopy. This is a common material for constructing a canopy over the entrance to a garage.

In addition, the polycarbonate visor has the following advantages:

  • Does not darken the garage entrance. The material allows the sun's rays to pass through.
  • The hollow structure of the sheets determines the minimum load on the supporting structure of the canopy. For the same reason, it is easy to carry out installation work on its flooring and fastening.
  • Corrosion and temperature changes in the outside air are not scary.

Making a garage canopy

Garage owners who want to save money on this element of the facade wall of the building try to make a canopy over the garage door with their own hands, without the help of professional installers. However, in this case the question arises: “how to make a visor correctly”? In order for the canopy over the garage door to be reliable with your own hands, you need to know several secrets of the technology for manufacturing canopies of this type.

Frame selection

Before you make a canopy (canopy) for the garage with your own hands, you should decide on the choice of material for the frame. The strength and service life of the visor depends precisely on the correct choice of material for the frame.

There are two options for materials common for making the frame:

  • Steel profiled pipe. The best option is a square cross-section. This makes it possible to make the structure more rigid, as well as securely fasten it to the surface of the garage wall.
  • Wooden block. The material option is less reliable in terms of service life, since the wood is subject to rotting from exposure to weather precipitation. If, nevertheless, wooden blocks are chosen, then it is advisable to use hardwood material. Such bars have a high structural density, which means they will last for several decades.

Selection of roofing material

Based on financial costs, it is preferable to have polycarbonate. In addition, it is easier to work with it if the installation is carried out “in one person”. The sheets can be easily cut into the required sizes using a simple knife, and due to the weight of the material, the garage owner can place the polycarbonate on the frame for fastening himself, without additional help.

Frame assembly

The design of a single-pitch canopy is the simplest to manufacture, which is why it is preferred by garage owners who decide to make a canopy themselves. The frame consists of several triangular elements. Each element has two mutually perpendicular sides, and one at an angle. It is to this side that the roofing material will be attached.

If you intend to assemble a frame based on a profile pipe, then you must have a welding machine, or seek help from a welder. In the absence of such possibilities, it is better to assemble the frame using foliage bars. For this, self-tapping screws and special steel corners are used, which allow you to grab individual bars, assembling them into a single frame.

For work on assembling the canopy frame, as well as the subsequent fastening of the roof, you should have a screwdriver. If you don’t have your own tool, it’s advisable to borrow a screwdriver from your neighbors in the garage. This will facilitate and speed up the process of making the canopy.

After assembling the supporting structure, it is time to install protective material on the frame. To fix polycarbonate, self-tapping screws with a special rubber gasket and a pressure washer are sold. Such fastenings do not allow precipitation to penetrate through through holes in the polycarbonate.

If the canopy does not have significant dimensions, then it is advisable to fasten the roofing material to the frame made, before installing it to the wall.

Installing the visor

The choice of fasteners for installing a garage canopy depends on the wall material. For a wooden wall, self-tapping screws with a diameter of 5 mm or more should be used. For brickwork, dowel-nails of the same diameter are used. The length of the fastenings must be at least 70 mm for a profile pipe with a cross-section of 20*20 mm, for wooden blocks with a cross-section of 50*50 mm - about 100 mm.

The frame is based on a profile pipe and must be coated with anti-corrosion enamel for aesthetics and increased service life. ? Read on.

An important design element is the canopy over the garage door. It has a protective role against precipitation, and in addition, it can protect the gate from freezing. If the garage is located near a residential building, the canopy will give the buildings a complete look and a unique design. Various materials are used for manufacturing, and the structure itself can be hinged or mounted on supports. Our article discusses the possibility of making a canopy over a garage door with your own hands. Useful recommendations and a detailed algorithm of actions will help you cope with such work without extra effort.

Some buildings were originally planned without this necessary element. This does not mean that everything was done incorrectly, just the presence of a canopy will help create additional convenience in using the garage space.

Advantages and main functions of the visor:

  • Protection from atmospheric precipitation. Moreover, the main advantage in this case is to prevent moisture from entering the lock mechanism. This will significantly increase service life and comfort of use.
  • Protection of lighting sources. If there is a light bulb above the garage door, the visor will reliably protect it from possible damage.
  • The garage entrance will also be less snow-covered or icy. In warm weather, the visor can, if necessary, serve as protection from the sun if work is carried out with the garage door open.
  • Decorative effect. If the canopy is made in the same style as the main structure, this will create a unified exterior and improve the overall appearance of the building.

The presence of a canopy over the garage door guarantees comfortable opening of the gate, because precipitation will not get down the collar. The hinges and the gate itself will also be protected from excess moisture, and at subzero temperatures they will not risk icing.

Types of garage visors

The designs of the visor are varied, so before starting work it would be useful to study this information. Unlike standard cooperative buildings, self-production will help you make additional architectural decoration of the building, as well as realize your design talents.

What types of canopies are there:

  1. Single-pitch is the simplest and most popular design. It is a flat canvas installed at a slope from the main building.
  2. Gable - is more reliable and easy to use. Sediment in this design rolls off to the sides, not forward.
  3. Arched ones are a simple and effective element for self-production, but during construction it is necessary to use flexible roofing materials.
  4. Tent roofs - maximum protection from all sides, characterized by complexity of implementation and variety of configurations.

When choosing a suitable canopy for a garage, you should also focus on the general appearance of the building. It is advisable to use the same roofing materials, as well as maintain the architectural style. To make a garage canopy yourself, you can take note of our useful recommendations.

Material selection

Standard garage buildings are usually already equipped with this necessary device. If the existing structure is broken or simply does not suit you according to some criteria, you can independently remake it “for yourself.” The priority task at the planning stage will be the selection and acquisition of materials.

Modern industry has prepared many possible options for this case. You can use any that are suitable for roofing. Many car owners have solved this issue even with the help of bitumen mastic applied to a solid base. In general, the main functions will be performed by an awning stretched over the garage door, but such a structure can hardly be called the final solution to the problem.

What can be made from:

  • Slate or other asbestos-containing materials.
  • Profiled sheeting.
  • Galvanized metal sheet.
  • Sheet and cellular polycarbonate.
  • Roll roofing materials.
  • Glass (usually stronger mineral analogues are used).
  • Metal tiles.

The priority will be the chosen type of visor design, as well as financial capabilities. Even a sheet of moisture-resistant plywood or chipboard is suitable for these purposes, but for a durable and reliable design it is better to choose appropriate materials. It should be borne in mind that in addition to summer rain, such a canopy must withstand a significant portion of snow or ice in winter. That is why it is necessary to focus on the mechanical strength of the selected material, as well as use additional reinforcements for the load-bearing support.

Required Tools

If you decide to take on such work, then by default you already have a standard “master’s kit”, and, if necessary, other equipment (or the ability to rent), for example, a welding machine. You can’t do without it if you make the supporting structure of the canopy from metal corners. Fastening with bolts is also possible, but more difficult, especially during “high-altitude” work.

In addition you will need:

  • Measuring tools: tape measure, ruler, corner, etc.
  • Electric hammer drill.
  • Grinder and corresponding cutting wheels for it.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Welding machine and electrodes (wire) for it.
  • Building level.

Depending on the chosen design and roofing material, you may also need metal scissors. Don't forget a marker or crayons for easy marking. We select fasteners depending on the material used. These can be roofing dowels and even simple nails.

We are drawing up a project

Any work must begin with drawing up a paper diagram. To do this, measure the actual dimensions of the gate, the possible dimensions of the canopy and its location. At this stage, the main thing is not to make a mistake and not repeat the sad experience of many car enthusiasts.

  • The canopy must protrude above the garage door by at least 600 mm, otherwise the feasibility of such protection will be very conditional.
  • It is necessary to make a slope for water drainage. Usually it is planned to be at least 20 degrees.
  • To reliably protect the gate hinges, it is necessary to add 30 centimeters to its length on each side. If this does not disturb the neighbors and does not spoil the appearance of the knowledge, the visor can be made longer.
  • Fastening slate or metal sheets must be done on the sheathing in increments of 20 to 40 centimeters. For flexible roll materials, it is better to use a continuous sheet of sheathing.
  • In addition to the fastening strip, you can seal the joints between the canopy and the wall. It is necessary to purchase materials that are resistant to the external environment.

The above recommendations will help you avoid common mistakes. Most often you can see too small an indentation, when the visor hangs just above the gate and interferes with its comfortable opening. The second common mistake is a short, flat structure that does not perform its intended functions.

Making a single-pitch garage canopy

Version without welding made of cellular polycarbonate:

As mentioned earlier, this is the simplest design, quite capable of being made with your own hands. To do this, you will need a preliminary plan, including a layout diagram and calculation of the necessary materials. The canopy stand is made of metal corners welded together. The design consists of two triangles (side posts) connected by straight lines. If the visor is quite massive, it is also advisable to provide additional stiffening ribs in the middle.

Work algorithm:

  1. The frame - the base - is assembled together. If it is made of wood, fastening is carried out using self-tapping screws. It is better to secure metal parts with welding seams.
  2. The structure is mounted above the gate. It is better to fix the side supports with anchors; the wall beam can be fastened with stainless steel screws of sufficient length.
  3. If rolled material is used, additional lathing is performed. The same recommendations are for slate and corrugated sheets.
  4. Roofing material is being installed.
  5. For maximum protection from precipitation, an adjacent strip is installed at the fastening site. Its outer edge goes deep into the wall of the building.
  6. You can install a drain at the end of the cornice or simply bend the edge up to drain water.

A single-pitch canopy does not provide reliable protection from all precipitation, but it is an excellent option for constructing a canopy over a garage door that you can make with your own hands. To prevent water from flowing vertically down, you can provide a small protrusion in the center of the canopy, and also consider an alternative - a gable canopy for the garage. This is discussed in detail below.

Making a gable garage canopy

A garage canopy of this type is more complex in design, but the protection will be much more reliable. A gable canopy is less exposed to wind, and water and snow roll down the sides of the structure. To carry out work of this kind, it is also necessary to draw up a preliminary project, which includes the construction of two “triangles - foundations”, which will be attached to each other.

The second option is to mount the canopy on free-standing supports. Such a structure will be much more massive, but it will not be afraid of any natural vagaries. This is an excellent option for making an additional canopy, for example, if car repair or repainting work will be carried out outdoors. Of course, this option is only possible if the garage is located directly next to the house or in your yard.

Building a small gable canopy over a garage door will not take much time, so you can consider a design with separate posts.

Execution algorithm:

  1. The calculation of the size of the visor will be similar to the previous one. The slope is made on two sides, and it is better to refrain from acute-angled structures that do not look very appropriate.
  2. After planning the support, you can begin assembling it. As in the previous case, it is necessary to make lathing depending on the roof used.
  3. The location of the vertical posts is marked on the ground. For reliability, it is advisable to provide a length reserve of approximately 40 - 50 centimeters. This part will be concreted into the ground.
  4. Installation of vertical posts is carried out in a pre-dug hole. A sand and gravel cushion is installed at its bottom, and then a concrete mixture is poured. For reliable fastening, you can additionally use reinforcement parts.
  5. After the concrete has hardened, you can begin installing the canopy frame. To do this, you will need two stepladders and at least one assistant who will hold the opposite end of the structure.
  6. The frame is attached to the wall and vertical supports. Various methods are used for this, the most traditional being welding and bolted connections.
  7. For this type of canopy, it is imperative to provide drainage, otherwise excess moisture will wash away the walls and foundation of the garage.
  8. At this stage, brackets are installed to secure the outlet pipe. By the way, it can also be made from scrap materials, for example, the remainder of a metal roofing sheet. In order for the structure to have a finished look, these two elements must match each other.
  9. The attachment points for the canopy and the wall are covered with a plank; in front, you can make a steep edge or decorative cladding.
  10. Lastly, a drainage system is installed. It can also have various configurations, as well as an additional element - a container for collecting rainwater.

A gable canopy over a garage door provides more options for implementation. Successful projects of this design can be found in photos on the Internet. It can be made asymmetrical, as well as additional decorative elements. In general, this will not affect the functionality of the structure, but will help it fit better into the surrounding exterior.

Making an arched garage canopy

The rounded shapes of this design fit perfectly into any architectural structure. In addition, using polycarbonate sheets as roofing will help make the job easy and quick.

Execution algorithm:

  1. Marking and designing such a visor will be a little more complicated. The frame has a curved shape, but it should also provide additional protection from water on the sides.
  2. The arc is calculated based on the length and the selected bend of the reach. Based on these, the given foundation is assembled.
  3. When installing the frame, the corner or pipes must be bent using a pipe bender to the desired radius.
  4. Short visors are made using two arcs; if the length is significant, it is better to increase this number.
  5. The frame is fastened to the wall, and, if necessary, to vertical posts. The side supports can be quite long and also serve a decorative function.
  6. It is advisable to cover the visor with flexible materials, choosing the method of fastening according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

As an option, you can consider the cost of purchasing a ready-made frame, on which you can then install polycarbonate sheets yourself. This material is very fragile, which must be taken into account during installation. It is best to use thin drills and set the drill to low speed.

Making a tent-type garage canopy

It is also quite possible to think through such a design, but the manufacturing time and possible difficulties are incomparable with previous options. A canopy - a tent can be rounded, for which flexible roofing materials are used. You can also think about the design in the form of segments. Typically, such complex configurations are used in residential buildings, then they effectively complement the overall facade of the building and perform additional functions. You can often find photos of projects where such a canopy can also play the role of a gazebo or veranda. But it is not so often that you can find this type of canopy on garage doors; it is often used to decorate the porch of a house.

Work algorithm:

  • It is necessary to determine the size and calculate the arc of the visor, as in the previous version.
  • Determine the required offset. Attach another one with the corresponding radius perpendicular to the manufactured arc.
  • Additional arcs are calculated according to the project. All of them will be attached from one point, and will have an equal bend in the reach.
  • The wall arch is attached to the wall with suitable hardware. This type of canopy rarely has additional vertical supports, but you can consider reinforcement on the side, which will play a decorative role.
  • It is preferable to choose soft roofing materials for canopy flooring. Bituminous or soft shingles, fiberglass or corrugated sheets are ideal.

A convenient canopy over the garage is a necessary part of the structure. It will protect against precipitation and make operation more comfortable, and will also help prevent water from getting inside the locking mechanism. Various materials are used for its manufacture, and the project itself can be completed independently. Various types of awnings over garage doors and their detailed do-it-yourself manufacturing are discussed in the information in our article.

A canopy over the garage will protect the entrance gate from the destructive effects of rain, snow, and hot sun, and thereby increase its service life. The canopy will also provide water drainage and prevent corrosion of the external lock and ice freezing on the threshold.

Polycarbonate products are especially popular. As you can see in the photo, this can be a small canopy over the entrance, or a large car canopy, under which several cars can easily fit. A polycarbonate roof installed in front of a garage can be of any size and have any shape, thanks to the unique properties of polymer plastic.

The most common type of garage carport is one in which the deck is shaped like an arch and is supported by four or six posts. The frame of this design is made of a metal profile, onto which plastic panels are attached using thermal washers. It is quite possible to install such a polycarbonate canopy with your own hands; this will require a minimal set of tools.

Material properties

Polycarbonate has a number of properties that make it possible to design large-area and quite geometrically complex structures. This polymer material, which has a cellular or monolithic structure, is very light and flexible. Canopies in front of a garage with a polycarbonate coating not only successfully perform a protective function, but are also a decorative element that fits perfectly into the design of the site.

Working with plastic does not require professional skills and expensive equipment, but still, following some simple rules is necessary so that the visor can perform its protective and decorative functions for as long as possible.

Rules for installing polycarbonate - how not to spoil the material

  1. When installing the canopy, it is necessary to take into account the thermal expansion of the material and attach the sheets over the garage door not close to each other, but at a short distance of 3 - 5 mm;
  2. The performance of the canopy depends on the correct choice of panel thickness. A sheet that is too thin will be deformed under the weight of snow; a sheet that is too thick will make the structure heavier and entail unjustified costs;
  3. The edges of the panels must be closed using a special profile. This is especially important for cellular polycarbonate. Debris gets into the open cells, which significantly reduces the light transmission of the roof and spoils its appearance. Water getting inside the sheet freezes and tears the material;
  4. Incorrect orientation of the panels during installation will lead to stagnation of water and damage to the canopy;
  5. The bending of the sheet for the roof of a garage with a canopy should not exceed the permissible values and must be performed only across the direction of the cells. Failure to do so may result in the decking breaking.

We use vehicles not only to save time, which we can then spend on more important things. We also provide shelter from the elements on inclement days. But it’s very unpleasant when, before you get behind the wheel, you get a portion of water on your collar. To prevent this from happening, it is better to spend a little time and make a canopy over the garage with your own hands.

What is it for?

To briefly list some of the benefits of having a canopy, these are:

  • Protection from precipitation. You will not only protect yourself from getting wet when opening the gate. Water will not be blown into the room itself, which could lead to flooding of the inspection hole.
  • Free access to the gate in case of heavy snow cover.
  • Protection from the scorching sun if you plan to do any work. To do this, it must be of sufficient size.
  • With a tent canopy you get protection from the wind. The gate will not slam shut at the wrong time.
  • Harmonious integration with other buildings in the yard.
  • You don't have to worry about the locking mechanism or hinges breaking down.
  • Additional protection for the electrical part of installed lighting.

Material of manufacture

It could be polycarbonate...

The materials that are suitable to make a canopy can be very diverse. Among the leafy ones we can distinguish:

  • corrugated sheeting;
  • metal tiles;
  • polycarbonate;
  • mineral or ordinary glass;
  • slate;
  • ondulin;
  • tin.

...or corrugated sheet

Among soft floorings that may be useful:

  • roofing felt;
  • bikrost;
  • soft tiles;
  • mastic on a solid base.

Note! Remember that not all types of roofing material are equally suitable for different canopy designs.

Types of visors

Among the main options for mini-awnings are:

  • Single-pitch. Can be secured with both oblique and straight supports.
  • Gable - resembles the roof of an ordinary house.
  • In the shape of an arch.
  • Domed.
  • With closed edges or tented. This can be any of the above, to the supports of which additional walls are attached.

Note! Some types of visors can be multi-tiered, everything will depend on what you personally want. They can be made with or without supports.

Necessary tool

Before you start, prepare what you will need:

  • measuring instrument - tape measure, meter or other;
  • angle grinder (grinder);
  • cutting discs;
  • horizontal or vertical hammer drill;
  • crayons or marker;
  • metal scissors (optional);
  • fastening material (selected in accordance with the selected coating);
  • metal profile for support (it may differ for each type of visor);
  • welding machine;
  • screwdriver;
  • drills for metal and concrete.

Installation of a single-pitch canopy

The basic rule for this type of projection is to install it as close as possible to the top edge of the gate. Make sure that it does not interfere with their opening. The sequence of actions will be as follows:

  • Take measurements of the width of the gate, as well as the area of the driveway that you plan to cover.
  • We add another 0.6 m to the resulting value. This is necessary to make small gaps of 30 cm.
  • We determine the length of the slope that suits us best. To do this, you need to set the size of the overhang, and also remember that the angle of inclination must be more than 15°.
  • We already know the length of the outer and wall beams. We make them from wood or metal. We connect them using end strips to form the frame of the future structure.
  • We make support struts. It would be better if they were metal. The dimensions of the two sides of the triangle will correspond to the length of the bevel and the height of the overall structure. The third side can be slightly smaller or serve as a spacer closer to the corner.
  • We fasten the bevels to the wall using HEX self-tapping screws or anchor bolts, having previously drilled holes.
  • We install the frame on the struts.
  • Depending on the chosen material, we make the lathing. Its optimal value is usually indicated in the instructions for the corresponding coating.
  • We fasten the flooring using self-tapping screws with a rubber seal. If the sheathing is metal, the fasteners must be with a drill.
  • Additionally, you can seal the area adjacent to the wall.

Note! On a single-pitch canopy, bend the front part. Now the water will not accumulate, it will go to the sides, which will bring more comfort when opening the gate.

Gable

If you want the snow cover not to fall in front of the gate, but, like the water, to move to the side, then you will really like this option. At the same time, you get a more rigid structure that resists wind well. Essentially, these will be two lean-to sheds that are installed at an angle. To get the correct result, you need to act like this:

  • We set the width of the future structure. We use the rule from the previous instructions regarding gaps.
  • Let's decide on the height.
  • Now we can derive the length of the slope. To do this, the square of the height must be added to the square of the half length of the base.
  • Let's make a small drawing.
  • We calculate the total reach length.
  • We choose what will be the support - brackets or posts.
  • If these are brackets, then they need to be made in the form of a right triangle (the side on which the future frame will lie will be equal to the length of the overhang.) and secured to the wall using anchors or bolt screws. They are attached with a bevel down. If these are posts, then, based on the length of the extension, it is necessary to make two holes 30–50 cm deep and install supports, cementing them.
  • We make rafters. For a small structure, two pairs will be enough. The angle of their connection is calculated based on the length of the slope and the total width of the structure. We strengthen them with jumpers (crossbars).
  • You can immediately connect them to each other using a ridge and jumpers at the base.
  • Raise the triangle and secure it to the brackets or supports.
  • We fix one of the rafters to the wall along the perimeter.
  • We make the sheathing and install the flooring (as in the previous instructions).

Arch-shaped visor

This design blends very harmoniously with the main lines of the building and gives it solidity. To manufacture and install it, you must follow the following instructions:

  • We decide on the sizes. We calculate the width with gaps, as in the first instructions. They can be increased, it is at your discretion. Choose the height according to the garage design.
  • We make arcs for the frame. How to make them with less effort? To do this, you need to calculate their radius, knowing the total length and width. A square metal profile from 12 to 16 mm is suitable. It is easier to bend the sections using a pipe bender. If this is not possible, then you can drive several pins into the ground according to the size of the circle and, resting on them, bend. The process will be easier if the metal is heated.
  • The number of arcs will depend on the length of the reach. For small visors, two of them will be enough. Along the entire length with the selected step, we connect them with crossbars.
  • We strengthen the entire structure with the help of beams, which we install as the base of the arches.
  • Can be mounted on posts or brackets. You can make both according to the previous instructions.
  • We fix the arc, which is closer to the wall, in several places using anchors, having previously made holes.
  • We fix the roofing material. Corrugated sheeting, metal tiles or a softer roof are suitable here.

Domed

In order to make a visor of this type, you will need to work a little. Most of the calculations will work from the previous instructions. But here are a couple more nuances:

  • Calculate and make an arc as in the previous version. It will be wall-mounted.
  • Make a base for the arc by connecting the two ends.
  • Decide on your departure.
  • Now bend another arc with a radius that will be equal to the reach.
  • Weld this arc perpendicular to the wall one.
  • You should get an imaginary ¼ of the ball.
  • Now you need to throw the meridians from the wall arch to the departure. Select the pitch and quantity in accordance with the design.
  • Fasten everything to the wall and cover with roofing material. For this option, soft tiles would be an excellent solution.
