Marquetry

Inlay- a special kind mosaics ; decoration of an object made of one material by cutting into its surface figured pieces of other materials, forming a pattern that does not protrude above the surface (various objects made of a different material are cut in the form of plates of various shapes with a decorated surface: mother-of-pearl metal, etc.). e.)

Marquetry or marquetry , is a decorative technique in which thin single-layer plywood, 1.6 - 3.2 mm thick, of various colored wood species or other material is glued to the frame of a piece of furniture. The technique gained popularity in England in the late 17th century, where it was introduced as part of the new craft of cabinet making. The most popular type of marquetry was a panel with floral and floral ornaments, which depicted a vase or a bouquet of flowers. At first, the drawing was made from contrasting, dark and light, wood species, such as sycamore or evergreen boxwood with walnut; later, the vegetal panels took on a splendid brilliance by inlaying them with green-tinted ivory to imitate leaves or red for exotic birds.

The conditions for the appearance of marquetry appeared after the invention in the second half of the 16th century. machine for production sawn veneer.
From that moment, precious wood species became veneer: black, red, pink - they began to veneer furniture from local inexpensive species.

There are two processes in marquetry (see figure below).

Intarsia inset according to a certain pattern into the background veneer of pieces of veneer of a different breed or another color of wood.
Veneering - application of the entire set on the surface of the product to be decorated.

block mosaic . With a block mosaic, according to the selected pattern, blocks are glued together from multi-colored bars or wood plates of various sections. Then they are cut across into many thin plates with the same patterns. The plates can be inserted into recesses or glued to the surface of the product.

parquetry - this is a set in which the mosaic is a simple pattern, such as parquet, from the same rectilinear geometric shapes. This set is made by gluing pre-cut elements along the edges, or by gluing them on lined paper close to each other.

When the pattern fills the entire surface, the mosaic elements are cut one after the other and pasted into a sheet of thick paper (paper set) on which the contour mosaic pattern is applied.

Gradually, all the paper is replaced with pieces of veneer. In order to get several ornamental sets of the same type, it is necessary to simultaneously cut out the background and the pattern with a jigsaw. The veneer for the background and the other for insertion are glued onto paper, laid one on top of the other, fixed in several places with glue. The contour of the pattern is applied to the top sheet of veneer, cut out with a jigsaw. The veneer sheet is separated, two nests and two inserts are immediately obtained, from which two sets of opposite colors are made.
