Wood pipe. DIY paper whistle toy

Music is an integral part of people's life. For a long time in Russia, ordinary people accompanied any work with singing. It helped to cope with physical labor, cheered up, distracted from the difficulties of life of that time.

Ordinary people did not have many opportunities for playing music - only their own voice and simple instruments made of wood, made with their own hands.

One of these musical assistants was a pipe. In general, this is the general name for a whole group of folk wind instruments. Among the Slavic peoples, it is customary to call flutes - thin tubes with holes.

Traditionally, the flute or snot (as it is also called) is considered a tool of shepherds, with whom she helped pass the time. The pipe sounds are very soft and pleasant. In addition, it made it easier to do work - the animals also reacted to the music.

Today we will learn how to make a pipe - a kind of flute.

So. Although making a pipe is not very difficult, at any time, folk craftsmen are appreciated who can make the instrument make truly magical sounds.

What does the tool consist of?

As already mentioned, the flute consists of a pipe with playing holes and a whistle (this is the mouthpiece).

The shape of the tubes can be different, as well as the material from which it is created (pine, hazel, ash, maple).

For the soft core of the instrument, you can use bird cherry, willow or elderberry.

Depending on the desire and imagination of folk craftsmen, the appearance of the instrument changes. The master can also change the number of holes that affect the sound of the notes. The more sounds, the richer and more colorful the melody will be.

It is interesting to note that there are double flutes that share a common mouthpiece.

Currently, nozzles are made of wood and plastic. How to make a pipe at home? Let's take a look at several ways in which you can create a musical instrument. But first, let's prepare everything you need.

Materials for making

What do we need? It:

Hand drill;

Iron rod;

Ruler;

Fire source;

Sandpaper;

Hacksaw;

Cautery on wood;

With fine notch).

And now the most important thing is the base from which the pipe will be made. We will analyze two types of material.

Reed

Let's take a stem (it grows along the banks of rivers and in swamps) and, finally, we will learn how to make a pipe out of reeds.

  1. Cut it to the required length: it can be changed as you wish.
  2. Sand the inside with sandpaper.
  3. Measure a couple of centimeters from the edge and cut out a rectangle on top (this is the whistle hole).
  4. Form the angle of the whistle hole (45 degrees) using a file.
  5. Then we take a piece of wood and fit it to the diameter of the tube.
  6. Once the size is selected, you need to spread the tree with glue and insert the reeds into the stem.
  7. Burn holes, focusing on the sound device. Remember, the wider the hole, the higher the note.
  8. The latter need to burn a hole next to the whistle, on the bottom surface.

To tune the instrument, you can use a special device - a tuner, it will help to adjust the pitch of each note.

Bamboo

To understand how to make a bamboo pipe, you need to evaluate how good the material is. It is pleasant and firm to the touch.

Unlike reeds, bamboo is not as easy to obtain as it is native to Africa and East Asia. But you can grow it at home, although, strictly speaking, it will not be the same plant. In nature, bamboo is a grass that grows to an extremely large size (up to 35 meters). At home, you can grow a variety of dracaena, which is also suitable if its height allows you to make the tube of the desired length.

If you are not the owner of such a plant, you can look for an old one, which in this case can find a second life in the form of a musical instrument.

The bamboo stem is as hollow on the inside as the reed, but it already has partitions inside. This eliminates the need to insert into the cavity.

The workpiece diameter should be 2-3 cm.

  1. Saw off the tube to the desired length. At the same time, make sure that the same partition remains at one end that will serve as a mouthpiece.
  2. Mark all required holes with a marker. For comparison, in the previous version, we immediately burned them.
  3. The rest of the partitions must be disposed of. To do this, heat an iron rod (that's what fire is for) on a gas burner or fire. It is necessary to burn the plant carefully so as not to burn yourself.
  4. Drill the holes with a hand drill, while the drill should also be heated properly.

So we learned how to make a pipe at home. When performing all these actions, you will have a high-quality musical instrument in your hands. What it will be made of is up to you.

Bamboo, like reeds, is an environmentally friendly and pleasant to use material that is not prone to special pollution. easy to clean.

The art of making a tool

The job description proves that making a pipe is not such an impossible task. But how to make a flute not just a beautiful thing, but a full-fledged instrument on which you can perform beautiful music?

The main thing is that you need to carefully approach the creation of playing holes and a whistle - they are responsible for the purity of the sound. In this case, the pipe should not be heavy, but light, like the musical sounds that are to be extracted from it.

Do-it-yourself graceful tool

We hope this article helped you figure out how to make a pipe out of various materials.

Now you yourself can find what to make this wonderful instrument: the main thing is that the object is hollow and strong enough.

With a little patience and effort, you will have a great tool in your hands. And, most importantly, the question of how to make a flute with your own hands will no longer arise. Now you can try to play it and imagine yourself in the role of a carefree shepherd on endless fields.

To make a pipe, you need reeds or reeds. It must be whole and dry. The stem should be about 30-35 cm long and the average diameter should be about 1 cm.

If you have a pet, then www.myzooshop.ru can be purchased for him, in particular for a dog, a variety of clothes and shoes.
When making a pipe, you also need to prepare files, a wood burner, a hacksaw, a sandpaper, superglue and a knife. To make a flute whistle, you need to pick up a piece of sturdy wood.

Uneven edges should be sawed off from the tube and sanded with sandpaper. After that, it is necessary to remove the partitions of the stem from the inside with a metal stem or knife.

Then you need to wrap sandpaper on a stick and insert it into the channel of the future flute. And you need to clean it up. To process the pipe further, you need to tightly wrap the edges of the stem with strong threads so that it does not crack.

Measure 2 cm from the edge of the flute and mark a rectangular contour of a hole 7 mm wide with a whistle pencil, while the length should be 5 mm. You need to carefully cut the hole.

It is necessary to process the whistle of the pipe with a needle file, while giving the correct slope to its corner. The whistle must be at a 45 degree angle.

From a specially prepared piece of wood, an insert must be made into the whistle, which must correspond to the size of the diameter of the flute channel. You need to insert a piece of wood inside, greasing it with super glue. The excess must be cut down.

After that, you need to turn on the tuner and blow on the whistle in order to determine the tonality. Taking a wood burning machine after determining the tonality, you need to burn a small hole. In the diatonic major scale, checking it with the tuner, widen the hole. A small hole is also made on the back side.

Materials and tools for making a pipe

To make a pipe out of wood with our own hands, we need a rather impressive arsenal:

  • sandpaper
  • small wooden sleeve (1.5 cm in diameter and 4 cm long)
  • ruler
  • pencil
  • tuner
  • small vise (not necessary, but much more convenient with them)
  • something that can be drilled (drill, drill, engraver) and drills of different diameters: from about 0.8 to 4.2 mm
  • file
  • semicircular cutter
  • pair of clamps
  • pVA glue
  • two wooden blocks 30x2x1 cm.

Making a pipe with your own hands

First, we take wooden blocks and mark them. It is necessary to draw the boundaries of the internal channel of the flute, on one side of the bar this channel is 1.5 cm wide, and on the other, 1 cm, that is, the channel will slightly narrow towards the end of the flute.

Now we clamp one of the bars in a vise and begin to cut out a semicircular canal. There is a shaded area on my workpiece that will need to be removed with a cutter.

We carefully and slowly remove the shavings, follow the direction of the wood fibers. They may not always go along the workpiece, so be careful, otherwise the cutter may go crooked.

We try to cut the canal to a flat semicircle along its entire length. We do the same with the second bar.

When both halves are cut, you need to sand them. With a piece of sandpaper we pass along the inner surface of the channel, achieving smoothness.

After grinding, go to the whistle. Having retreated 4 cm from the upper edge of the workpiece (where the wide end of the channel is), draw a rectangle 5 by 7 cm, preferably exactly in the center.

With a 4.2 mm drill, we make three holes close to each other, so that an oval window is obtained.

Now we take the file and bring the window to a rectangular shape, according to the markup made.

After that, with the same file we grind off one side of the window at an angle of about 30-45 degrees. This is the most important part of the job: the sound quality will depend on the sharpness and smoothness of the edge.

It's time to put the halves together. We smear them with PVA glue and fold them, carefully aligning the channel. Press with clamps and leave to dry for a couple of hours.

When the glue is dry, unscrew the clamps and take the knife. Cut off the top of the small wooden sleeve, about 1.5 mm, so that you get a flat, even edge. Look at the photo and everything will become clear.

After that, grease the sleeve with glue and insert it from the upper end of the flute, forming a whistle. Cut edge upward, exactly to the edge of the whistle window.

We are waiting for the glue to dry, and we take up the knife. Gently rounding off the workpiece, give it a rounded shape, then smooth it with a sandpaper.

To make it convenient to play, we will make a cut at the upper end of the pipe at the back.

Now the fun part is setting. Try blowing a pipe, listen to the sound and check on the tuner. If you did everything carefully, you will get A sharp. This is the lowest sound that our pipe can make.
In total, we will have seven notes and six playing holes. Let's mark them: the very first hole will be 6 cm from the lower end of the pipe, the rest of the holes will be in 2 cm increments.

Armed with drills of different diameters, we begin tuning. The pipe is often tuned in natural major. This means that we should get the following series of sounds: A sharp - Do - D - Re sharp - Fa - Sol - A.

The general principle of tuning is as follows: the larger the hole, the higher the sound. Therefore, first we drill a very small hole, listen. If you need a slightly higher sound, drill out more. The main thing is not to overdo it, because you won't be able to make the hole smaller.

We start drilling from the very bottom hole. When it is configured, move on to the second. The second hole is adjusted when the first one is open, and so on. That is, when you listen to sound from some hole, this very hole and all holes below it must be open.

So that is all! The pipe is ready, you can start playing. Or you can decorate it to your taste. I just covered my pipe with stain.

Drill with your hands (jcomments on)

AND instruments: a vice, a plane, a hacksaw for metal (or wood with a fine tooth), a sharp knife (best of all retractable with breakable blades), needle files, an emery wheel (it is convenient to use an electric drill attachment in the form of a circle with replaceable sheets of sandpaper), an electric drill and a long wood drill with a diameter equal to the inner diameter of the pipe, glue (any that glues wood, Moment, for example), wood stain or varnish for wood (you can use natural wax)

M material: in principle, an even trunk or branch of any tree, without knots, is suitable, but it is best to use hazel, it is even and easily processed. A freshly cut tree must be allowed to dry, for about half a year - a year. Therefore, it makes sense to procure material for future use. I would not recommend doing it from raw wood, and it is harder to process, and then it can crack as it dries. You can also use purchased wood - a block of a suitable size. But coniferous wood (and basically it is sold) has pronounced annual layers and therefore, when processing, it is easy to chip or scuff. Yes, and it is too soft, the walls of the pipe will have to be made thicker.

So. Consider making a small pipe as an example. We make a wooden pipe. We take wood, obviously of greater length and diameter than the expected size of the pipe. For example, if you need a pipe with an inner diameter of 14mm and a length of 30cm. then we take a piece of wood with a diameter of 35-40mm. This is what you need for this: no matter how exactly you place the drill, it will still go slightly at random. If you don't have a drilling machine (and you don't have one, like me :))), you won't be able to drill perfectly vertically. And so you have room for maneuver. So we clamp the workpiece vertically in a vice, set the drill as evenly as possible and drill. You will have no problems with short tubes 15 centimeters long, but the longer you conceive the tool, the thicker you need to take the workpiece. If the drill is bent a lot and crawled out on the side of the workpiece, this is not a problem, just saw off the lower unsuccessful part, and use the upper for a shorter pipe.

Let's lower the drilled, everything is fine. Now saw off the drilled workpiece as long as the pipe will be (this tool has a length of 160mm). And, holding it in a vice, begin to process it with a plane to a wall thickness of 2-3mm. The final finishing is carried out on a grinding wheel. So you have a wooden tube. There should be no large burrs inside it. If there are any, you must either remove them with a large round file, or with the same drill. Since condensation will settle in the instrument when playing, it is necessary to protect it from moisture from the inside. To do this, plug one end of the tube (you can use your finger) and pour a little stain or varnish inside through the funnel. We plug the other end of the tube and shake it vigorously so that the stain evenly covers the inner surface of the tube. Drain off the remaining stain and leave to dry for an hour.

After it dries, we blow a whistle. We mark the workpiece: you can use the given dimensions, you can use your own, not the essence, the whistle will still work. The centerline is drawn first, then everything else.

With a sharp knife, we first cut the line marked in the photo with dimensions, in red color 1.5-2 mm deep and then obliquely cut off this entire semicircular wedge. This is in order to remove excess wood and then there will be less work with the file. Re-mark the rectangular hole and cut it out with the same knife. Next, we take a flat file, and carefully begin to form the whistle wedge. You can finally finish and iron it with a piece of sandpaper - zero, but that later, when the whistle is over.

Now, with the same flat file, it is necessary to pierce the rectangular slot of the whistle inside the tube, 0.5-0.8 mm deep. Closer to the entrance, it should expand slightly.

Then the so-called insert must be made. We take a piece of wood and first with a knife, and then on emery we adjust it to the inner diameter of the pipe. It should be inserted with difficulty, but just do not overdo it, otherwise you will split the tube. It should be long from the red line to the entrance to the pipe, until you saw it off from the base, so it will be more convenient to glue it in, there is something to hold on to and you can rotate it inside until the glue has dried in order to choose the best sound. Now the insert must be lightly ground off on one side, the one that will adjoin the inner slot of the whistle. Closer to the wedge, just a little bit, closer to the entrance to the reed pipe, about 1mm. with more.

Now insert it into the pipe and blow into the slot. Adjust the sound by moving the insert, or by changing the size of the wedge. The slot thickness at the entrance should be somewhere around 1.5 mm. If you like everything, take out the insert and cover the inner slot of the whistle and the part of the insert that adjoins it with stain. After the stain dries, glue the insert, and adjust until the glue dries. After the glue has completely dried, saw off this protruding part of the insert along with part of the tube obliquely, cut off this part of the pipe with a knife so that it would be convenient to hold it in your lips, sand it with sandpaper.

After this, it is necessary to make holes in the pipe, clamping which will change the height of the air column inside and, thereby, the pitch of the sound. Holes should be cut with a knife, not drilled out. Drilling will create burrs inside the tube and can be avoided by cutting. Here are the dimensions of the holes and the distance between them for my pipe. It is not tuned in any way, they were cut out as it seemed to me necessary (well, I have no ear for music, no! :)). If you are a musician, then it will not be difficult for you to adjust the pipe by changing the size of the holes. You need to start cutting from the lowest hole (the one farther from the whistle).

This shows the dimensions of a larger pipe copied from a tuned tool.

After everything is cut and configured, you can decorate the instrument with carvings, put your own stamp on it, give it a name, and in general somehow decorate. As everything is done, the pipe must be protected from external precipitation, moisture, etc. To do this, it is covered with several layers of stain, varnish or, the best option, with natural wax. To make a wax coating, you need to evenly heat the pipe over the electric stove and walk over it with a piece of wax, it will melt and be absorbed into the wood. Remove excess wax with a cloth. After cooling down, polish.

For storage, it is not bad to make a leather or linen case with strings, to decorate it. And dust does not enter and there is less chance of damage to the instrument.

How to make a pipe (flute) with your own hands

Svirel (pipe) is an ancient musical instrument. Usually shepherds made it to amuse themselves in monotonous work. They made a pipe (pipe), as a rule, from reeds, reeds, or other hollow material. To make such a pipe, you need a hollow tube of approx. 30cm. with an inner diameter of approx. 1 cm. This is a reed stalk (it grows along river banks or in wetlands) or a PVC tube. You will also need a tuner or some musical instrument to tune the sound, a hacksaw, a wood burner, a sharp knife, Moment glue, a file, sandpaper and a piece of wood for a whistle.

The progress of work on the manufacture of a pipe (pipe) from reeds

First, you need to saw off the tube lengthwise (I have it 27cm), align the edges and remove the internal partitions (if any) with a knife:

Then we clean the inner channel with sandpaper wound on a stick:

Now it is necessary at a distance of approx. 2cm. cut the whistle hole from the edge. It has a rectangular shape. Its width is 0.7 cm, length is 0.5 cm. This is approximate. Finally, it can be adjusted when adjusting. Mark the hole with a pencil and cut it:

Now we form the corner of the whistle hole with a file (on the side closer to the exit). It should be at an angle of 45 degrees. This angle is very important because he is directly involved in the formation of sound, cutting the stream of air.

Now you need to make a wad from a piece of wood, and adjust it to the diameter of the inner channel (the diagram of its device is below). It should reach the near edge of the whistle hole.

You can pull off the edge of the pipe with a thread so that the reed does not crack:

insert the wad into the pipe, after trying it on:

Saw off the excess, leveling the edge:

We coat the wad with glue and insert it into the pipe. When it dries up, we form a bevel of the edge of the pipe for the convenience of playing:

Now, using the tuner, we check the tonality (first sound) of our flute. I got "Re". Next, you need to burn the first hole. At the beginning, we burn a small hole, check it with the tuner and adjust the holes, expanding it. The wider and higher the hole to the whistle, the higher the note. The pipe system is diatonic, i.e. scale is major or minor. With all the holes closed, the note "D" was obtained, which means the first hole will correspond to the note "Mi", the second note is "F sharp", the third is "G", the fourth is "A", the fifth is "C", the sixth is "C sharp", and the lower "Re". This is a major. Below I will lay out a diagram with hole measurements and a whistle device.

After adjusting six holes from the upper surface of the flute, it is necessary to clean the inner channel from the remains of burning with sandpaper:

The last is to burn a hole from the lower surface of the flute:
